mentoring

what's involved

We work in partnership with local Primary and Secondary Schools to act as an intervention initiative for young people who are facing challenges which are affecting behaviour in school.

We offer 1-2-1 Sessions with Primary students and Group Sessions with Secondary students, to help talk through their challenges and to recommend different coping mechanisms that they can apply in order to help them to manage their emotions in a less disruptive way.

This is a free service offered to schools, all our volunteers are DBS checked.

If you would like to find our more information in regards to how you can partner with us, please email info@jubileechurchlondon.org

why is this needed?

  1. The number of 5-16 year old children excluded from school each year is so big that they would fill Wembley arena 22 times over

  2. In the latest data available, there were 36, 000 primary-aged children excluded in one school year

  3. 4,000 of these exclusions were children under the age of 6

An increasing number of children are struggling in schools due to different reasons and are often in danger of being excluded.

School budgets are increasingly being cut such that there is not enough budget to provide the additional resources and staff required to meet the needs e.g. Learning Mentors

Schools are having to prioritise their limited budgets  to meet the needs of the children who are already classified as SEN (Special Education Needs) rather than those children on the cusp of being excluded i.e. fire chasing rather than prevention.

how we help

We can bring the much needed support to these children and families by being the listening ear that might just help that child make the right choices or help them get through a time of crisis e.g. family break-up, bereavement or even be that trusted adult that they child in an abusive relationship might feel able to open up to. The school is part of our local community and we have a link with them through staff, parents and children.

what the mentoring looks like

“1 child, 1 hour each week for 1 year”

  1. We work with local schools to provide mentors (coaches) who will visit the schools and spend some time with identified children and help them along before they fall off the track.

  2. We work with the families to help better understanding and parenting to provide the needed support at home

The programme aims to tackle the social, emotional and behavioural difficulties of pupils in schools, by providing space and time for them to be coached through their issues and encouraged in their abilities.

Each coach (mentor) supports at least one pupil for an hour each week. The minimum amount of time for a young person to access the programme is one half term but a school year is generally recommended. It can take several weeks for a child to learn to trust and open up to you so ideal length is 1 year.
